UN takes high-tech approach to improving global mining standards
The United Nations has partnered with Value.Space, a leader in satellite-based risk assessment, to revolutionize safety standards in the global mining industry. The initiative, spearheaded by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), will leverage advanced satellite technology to monitor mining sites for structural stability, ground movement, and environmental impact. The program aims to prevent disasters like tailings dam collapses, which have caused catastrophic damage in the past, most notably in Brazil’s Brumadinho disaster in 2019.
This collaboration reflects a growing recognition of the need for innovation in managing mining risks as the industry grapples with increasing safety and environmental concerns. The real-time monitoring system will also benefit insurers and regulators by providing high-resolution data that enhances accountability and compliance. By adopting cutting-edge technology, the UN hopes to establish a global benchmark for safe and sustainable mining practices, offering a model for both developed and resource-rich developing nations.
