Spain’s Bold Initiative to Chart Its Mineral Wealth Amid Green Transition
The Spanish government has announced plans to map out the nation’s mineral resources, focusing on key raw materials essential for the green transition.
This initiative, unveiled on March 11, 2025, is part of a broader strategy by the European Union to secure a stable supply of critical minerals while reducing reliance on China.
The project aims to update existing mining regulations and implement measures for the restoration of mining areas, as well as boost recycling efforts for these materials.
Although the plan comprises dozens of measures, it does not specify the level of planned investments.
An Energy Ministry spokesperson declined to comment on the potential costs, while another source noted that the extent of any financial commitment will largely depend on the forthcoming budget, which is yet to be presented to and approved by the lower house.
This move by Spain is seen as a strategic step to strengthen the European raw material supply chain amid increasing global competition and geopolitical uncertainties, particularly those related to China’s dominant position in the mineral market.
The initiative reflects both an economic and environmental imperative, aiming to modernize resource management practices while supporting the EU’s overarching goal of a sustainable, self-reliant green economy.
