Epiroc Deepens African Aftermarket Push With Eventspec Acquisition
The acquisition adds approximately 125 employees and a South African business that generated R280 million—about US$16 million—in 2025. Beyond expanding Epiroc’s service offering, the deal points to growing competition for Africa’s mining aftermarket.
Epiroc has completed its acquisition of Johannesburg-based Eventspec, strengthening the mining-equipment group’s capacity to manufacture replacement components and provide equipment rebuild, repair and maintenance services.
Eventspec produces replacement parts for drill rigs, mine trucks and underground loaders. Its capabilities include specialised machining, fabrication, assembly, hydraulic repairs and the rebuilding of underground mining equipment.
The company employs approximately 125 people and generated revenue of around R280 million—approximately US$16 million—in 2025.
Eventspec will become part of Epiroc’s Equipment & Service business area, with its financial contribution recorded under service revenue.
Why the aftermarket matters
Mining-equipment manufacturers generate revenue not only when they sell new machines, but throughout the equipment’s operating life.
Replacement parts, component rebuilds, maintenance programmes and technical support can provide recurring income while helping mines extend equipment life and reduce unplanned downtime. These services become particularly important when imported components have long procurement and delivery times.
By acquiring Eventspec, Epiroc gains established South African manufacturing and repair capacity instead of building those capabilities from the ground up.
Eventspec operates workshops providing equipment rebuilds, drill-boom manufacturing and repair, rock-bucket fabrication, hydraulic services and specialised component production. Integrating this capacity into Epiroc’s wider network could support faster access to certain parts and services.
Local capacity with wider ambitions
Eventspec has historically served customers primarily in South Africa. Epiroc, however, operates across numerous African mining markets and has presented the acquisition as an opportunity to expand the business beyond its existing customer base.
That creates the possibility of Eventspec’s products and services reaching mines elsewhere on the continent through Epiroc’s distribution and service network.
For Copperbelt operators, South Africa remains an important regional source of mining machinery, replacement components and specialist technical services.
The acquisition could therefore become relevant to mines in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo if Epiroc extends Eventspec’s offering into those markets.
No new facility or Eventspec-specific expansion in the DRC or Zambia has been announced, however. The immediate transaction remains centred on South African operations.
Greater integration—and potentially less independence
The transaction also highlights consolidation within the mining aftermarket.
Independent engineering and component companies can offer mines alternatives to purchasing replacement parts and services directly from original-equipment manufacturers. By acquiring a local aftermarket specialist, Epiroc gains more control over engineering, manufacturing and servicing capabilities surrounding mining equipment.
Customers may benefit from more integrated technical support, access to Epiroc’s international network and potentially shorter lead times. At the same time, further consolidation could reduce the number of independent aftermarket options available to mining companies.
The commercial impact will ultimately depend on how Epiroc integrates Eventspec, whether it expands production capacity and whether customers experience measurable improvements in availability, pricing and turnaround times.
The acquisition gives Epiroc an established South African platform from which to compete for a larger share of Africa’s mining-service expenditure. The next test is whether that platform develops into a genuinely wider African manufacturing and support network.
