About
Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc (CEC) is Zambia's leading independent power transmission and electricity distribution company, listed on the Lusaka Securities Exchange and a member of SAPP (Southern African Power Pool). Established in 1997 to take over ZCCM's power infrastructure during privatisation, CEC owns, operates and maintains the high-voltage transmission network supplying Zambia's major copper mines with electrical power, and has expanded into power generation and telecommunications. CEC's transmission network covers over 900 km of high-voltage lines and 14 substations serving the Copperbelt, and the company supplies power to First Quantum Minerals, KCM, Mopani and other large industrial consumers. CEC also operates optic fibre-based telecommunications infrastructure and has interests in power projects in Zambia and sub-Saharan Africa including the Itimpi Solar Plant. CEC holds interests in the DRC and is regarded as a key enabler of Zambia's mining sector given copper mining's enormous electricity requirements.
