What is KFM in the DRC?

KFM — Kisanfu copper-cobalt project — is an expansion development adjacent to Tenke Fungurume Mining in Lualaba province. It is owned 95 percent by CMOC Group and 5 percent by Gécamines. KFM adds a second concentrator and production line to the existing TFM infrastructure base and targets incremental copper and cobalt output on top of TFM's base production.

What the project is

KFM was previously referred to as the Kisanfu project during its development phase. It sits on the same general permit area as TFM near the town of Fungurume in Lualaba province. CMOC began construction of KFM's concentrator after completing its full consolidation of TFM ownership in 2022.

The project is designed to exploit sulphide copper-cobalt ore bodies that require flotation processing, as distinct from the oxide ores processed by TFM's heap-leach circuit.

CMOC's capital programme in the DRC — covering both TFM sustaining capital and KFM construction — is among the largest single mine-site capital commitments in the country over the 2022–2026 period.

Ownership

CMOC Group: 95% Gécamines: 5%

The 5 percent Gécamines stake in KFM is smaller than its 20 percent position in TFM, reflecting different negotiated terms for the expansion versus the original project.
