About
Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) is Botswana's primary coal producer, 100% owned by Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB) — the Government of Botswana's mining investment vehicle. Located 14 kilometres northwest of Palapye in the Central District along the Serowe-Palapye road, MCM was established in 1973 (originally as an Anglo American Corporation subsidiary) and has been a cornerstone of Botswana's energy security for over 50 years. The mine operates an underground coal operation using continuous miner technology and supplies thermal coal to the Morupule B 600MW power station — Botswana's largest electricity generation facility — as well as to export markets. MCM currently produces approximately 2.8 million tonnes per annum. MCM is triple ISO-certified: ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 55001 (Asset Management). The mine participated in Mining Indaba 2025 and 2026 in Cape Town. MCM employs approximately 1,500 people and contributes significantly to Palapye's economic and social development.
