About
Mopani Copper Mines Plc is one of Zambia's most significant copper mining operations, operating the Nkana Mine and Cobalt Refinery in Kitwe and the Mufulira Mine, Copper Smelter and Copper Refinery — two of the country's oldest and most storied mining assets on the Zambian Copperbelt. Established in 2000 through the privatisation of ZCCM, Mopani was originally owned by a Glencore-led consortium and ZCCM-IH. In a landmark 2024 transaction, ZCCM-IH divested 51% of Mopani to International Resources Holdings (IRH), a UAE-based mining investment company, in a deal that brought a commitment of up to $1.1 billion in new capital investment for mine rehabilitation and expansion. ZCCM-IH retains a 49% stake. Mopani's operations include underground mines reaching depths of over 1,500 metres, a copper smelter capable of processing 1 million tonnes of concentrate per annum, and one of Zambia's only cobalt refineries. The complex employs approximately 8,000 people directly and is a cornerstone employer on the Copperbelt.
