About
The Minerals Council South Africa (formerly the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, rebranded 2018) is the primary industry association representing the South African mining sector — one of the world's oldest mining bodies, established in 1887. It represents the interests of companies that account for approximately 90% of South Africa's mineral production value, including gold, platinum group metals (PGMs), coal, iron ore, manganese, chrome, diamonds, and base metals. Members include Anglo American, AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Sibanye-Stillwater, Impala Platinum, Exxaro Resources, African Rainbow Minerals, Kumba Iron Ore, Harmony Gold, and many others. The Council engages on policy, legislation, labour relations, and safety — South Africa's MHSA (Mine Health and Safety Act) compliance is a key focus. It also represents mining employers in the Mine Workers' Union bargaining processes (AMCU, NUM). The rebranding to 'Minerals Council' reflected the sector's evolution beyond gold to a broader critical minerals identity. The Council publishes an annual Facts and Figures report on the South African mining sector and advocates for competitive, predictable regulatory and fiscal frameworks. CEO: Mzila Mthenjane (from 2023).
