About
Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) is Zambia's largest coal mining company and one of the country's largest independent power producers (IPPs), operating the only coal-fired thermal power plant in Zambia. Located at Maamba in the Sinazongwe District of Southern Province, MEL operates a 300 MW mine-mouth thermal power station commissioned in 2016, which contributes approximately 9% of Zambia's national installed electricity generation capacity and provides critical baseload power independent of hydrology. The company holds Zambia's largest coal mining concession — over 7,900 hectares with estimated reserves of 140 million tonnes — and mines high-grade and thermal-grade coal to fuel its power plant. MEL is a joint venture owned 65% by Nava Bharat (Singapore) Pte Ltd (a subsidiary of Nava Bharat Ventures of India) and 35% by ZCCM-IH, with total investment exceeding US$919 million since 2010. A second 300 MW unit expansion (Unit II) is under development, targeting completion in 2026. MEL won the Project Finance International Power Deal of the Year award in 2015.
