About
Kumba Iron Ore Limited is Africa's largest iron ore producer and the fifth largest globally, listed on the JSE (KIO) and approximately 70% owned by Anglo American plc. Headquartered in Rosebank, Johannesburg, Kumba owns and operates two of the world's great open pit iron ore mines: Sishen Mine in the Northern Cape — one of the largest open-pit iron ore mines on earth — and Kolomela Mine, also in the Northern Cape. Together these operations produce approximately 35-40 million tonnes of iron ore per annum for export, primarily to steel mills in China, Europe and the Middle East, via a dedicated private railway to Saldanha Bay Port on the South African west coast. The Sishen Mine's jig beneficiation plant is the largest of its kind in the world, producing premium high-grade lump and fine iron ore products. Kumba is a significant contributor to South Africa's economy and is one of the largest single employers in the Northern Cape province. Kumba is a member of the Minerals Council South Africa and a regular exhibitor at Mining Indaba.
