About
Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) is Zambia's largest fully integrated copper producer, with an entire production value chain spanning open pit and underground mines, concentrators, a state-of-the-art copper smelter, a tailings leach plant and a refinery at Chingola and Nchanga in the Copperbelt. KCM was established in 2000 through the privatisation of ZCCM's assets and is majority owned by Vedanta Resources, with ZCCM-IH holding a 20.6% minority stake. The company operates the Konkola underground mine — one of the world's deepest copper mines — which exploits the exceptionally high-grade Konkola Deep ore body. KCM also operates the Nchanga Open Pits and concentrators, and the Nchanga Copper Smelter and Tailings Leach Plant which processes material from multiple sources. KCM employs approximately 13,000 people and is the largest private sector employer in Zambia. The company has faced operational and financial challenges in recent years but remains central to Zambia's copper industry.
