About
Ivindo Iron SA is the joint venture company developing the Belinga Iron Ore Project in Gabon's Ogooué-Ivindo Province — a high-grade, hematite iron ore deposit believed to host over 1 billion tonnes of ore at greater than 60% iron. The JV is between Fortescue Ltd (Australia, ASX/NYSE: FMG), one of the world's largest iron ore producers, and the Government of Gabon (10% free-carry interest under Gabon's Mining Code). Fortescue signed a mining convention with Gabon in February 2023 committing over US$200 million for early-stage development. Construction commenced in H2 2023 and the first cargo of iron ore from Belinga was exported in December 2023 — marking the first time Fortescue shipped iron ore from outside of Australia — confirming the project's viability. Since then, Ivindo Iron has focused on extensive exploration, studies, and planning for a fully integrated mine, rail and port solution to eventually scale the operation significantly. The early-stage development is a conventional open-pit mine initially producing up to 2 million tonnes per year, trucked and railed using existing Gabon infrastructure. More than US$30 million in goods and services has been sourced locally in Gabon to date. Following Gabon's August 2023 military coup, Fortescue confirmed its continued commitment to Belinga as a long-term investment. Fortescue CEO is Andrew Forrest (executive chairman) / Dino Otranto (CEO). Ivindo Iron is actively engaging local communities, government and civil society stakeholders.
