About
Gécamines SA (La Générale des Carrières et des Mines) is the Democratic Republic of Congo's state-owned national mining company and one of Africa's largest mining enterprises. Founded in 1966 as the successor to the colonial-era Union Minière du Haut-Katanga, Gécamines holds the world's largest cobalt deposit and significant copper, zinc and tin reserves across the provinces of Haut-Katanga, Lualaba and Haut-Lomami. The company is the DRC government's primary vehicle for managing state mineral interests, holding equity stakes in major joint ventures including Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) with CMOC, Kinsevere with MMG, and Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) with Glencore. In 2025 and 2026, Gécamines has been repositioning itself as an active commodity trader, announcing landmark offtake agreements with Mercuria and VITOL for copper and cobalt production, and a strategic partnership with Kipushi Corp for zinc. With over a century of continuous operations, Gécamines remains central to every major mining transaction and investment decision in the DRC.
