About
Debswana Diamond Company (Pty) Limited is one of the world's foremost diamond producers by value and volume, established in 1969 as a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Botswana and De Beers Group. Debswana operates four diamond mines — Jwaneng (the world's richest diamond mine by value), Orapa (the world's largest diamond mine by area), Letlhakane and Damtshaa — collectively producing around 30 million carats per year, representing approximately 23% of global diamond output. The company is the single largest contributor to Botswana's national economy, accounting for approximately one-third of government revenues and over 85% of foreign exchange earnings. Debswana is the largest private sector employer in Botswana, with approximately 4,200 permanent staff and over 6,000 contractors. In 2025, a landmark new 25-year agreement between Botswana and De Beers extended Debswana's mining licences and expanded the Okavango Diamond Company's share of Debswana's rough diamond production from 25% to 30%, with a pathway to 50%. Debswana's Corporate Centre is in Gaborone.
