About
Chemaf SA is a purpose-driven copper and cobalt mining, exploration and production company with over 20 years of continuous operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Operating in the Haut-Katanga and Lualaba provinces, Chemaf has developed two world-class assets — the Mutoshi and Etoile mines — with a combined peak production capacity of more than 75,000 tonnes of copper and 20,000 tonnes of cobalt hydroxide annually. The company is positioned as a key contributor to the global energy transition, producing critical battery metals from DRC's copper-cobalt belt. In March 2026, Gécamines and the DRC government authorised the acquisition of Chemaf's assets by a consortium led by US firm Virtus Minerals, supported by the US State Department and the Trump administration, in a landmark transaction reflecting the strategic importance of DRC cobalt and copper to American supply chain security. Chemaf's operations are headquartered in Lubumbashi with a corporate office in Dubai and have delivered significant employment and community development benefits to host communities across Katanga over two decades.
