About
La Chambre des Mines du Gabon is the industry association representing mining companies in Gabon, a country whose mining sector is dominated by manganese production — Gabon holds approximately 25% of the world's known manganese reserves (150 million tonnes) and is the world's second-largest manganese producer. The Chamber represents Comilog SA (Eramet subsidiary, world's leading high-grade manganese producer, 6.8 million tonnes in 2024), Nouvelle Gabon Mining (NGM, 2.4 Mtpa manganese at Franceville and Okondja), and Fortescue/Ivindo Iron (developing the Belinga iron ore deposit, one of Africa's largest with over 1 billion tonnes at >60% Fe, first cargo December 2023). The Chamber liaises with the Ministère des Mines, des Ressources Hydrauliques et des Hydrocarbures and the Direction Générale des Mines. Gabon experienced a military coup in August 2023 (General Brice Oligui Nguema, ousting President Ali Bongo after 14 years), but mining activity has continued broadly uninterrupted under the transitional government, which has maintained openness to foreign mining investment. Gabon's broader mineral potential includes gold (greenstone belts), iron ore, niobium, phosphates, and rare earth elements — much still underexplored given the country's dense rainforest cover (85% forested). The government aims to increase mining's contribution to GDP from 6% to 25% by 2030.
