About
La Chambre des Mines du Burkina Faso (CMBF) is the industry association representing mining companies in Burkina Faso, one of West Africa's leading gold producers with annual output typically around 55–65 tonnes. The Chamber represents major producers including IAMGOLD (Essakane — approximately 430,000 oz/yr, Burkina's largest mine), West African Resources (Sanbrado + Kiaka, first gold June 2025), Orezone Gold (Bomboré, hard rock first gold December 2025), Nordgold (Bissa-Bouly — under US sanctions since 2022), and Endeavour Mining (Houndé, Karma, Mana). Burkina Faso has experienced severe political instability since the 2022 military coup (Captain Ibrahim Traoré) and a second coup later that year. Since 2023, the transitional government has nationalized multiple mine assets (including the Wahgnion and Boungou mines, formerly Endeavour Mining), suspended mining permits, and increased state royalties. The CMBF continues to advocate for stable investment conditions and security for mining operations in a context of significant jihadist insurgency in the north and east of the country. Despite insecurity, gold mining remains Burkina Faso's largest export earner, accounting for approximately 70% of foreign exchange revenues.
