About
La Chambre des Mines de Mauritanie represents mining companies operating in Mauritania, a country with significant mineral wealth including iron ore, gold, copper, phosphates, and gypsum. Iron ore is the flagship commodity: SNIM (Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière) operates one of the world's largest iron ore complexes at Zouerate, producing 14 million tonnes per annum with a planned expansion to 45 million tonnes. Gold mining is growing rapidly, led by Kinross Gold (Tasiast mine, 620,000 oz/yr — one of Africa's largest gold mines), which paid approximately USD$1.5 billion to the government in taxes and royalties in 2024 alone. Other significant operators include First Quantum Minerals (Guelb Moghrein copper-cobalt-gold) and Aura Energy (Tiris uranium project, production targeted ~2027). The Chamber liaises with the Ministère du Pétrole, des Mines et de l'Énergie and the Direction des Mines et de la Géologie. Mauritania holds an established and generally stable investment climate for mining, supported by international financial institutions including the World Bank and African Development Bank. SNIM's planned expansion to 45 Mtpa iron ore would make it a global top-5 iron ore producer.
