About
A Câmara de Mineração de Moçambique (CAMIM) is the representative body for mining companies in Mozambique, one of Africa's most resource-rich nations. Mozambique holds significant reserves of coal (Tete Province — among the world's largest coking coal deposits), natural gas (Rovuma Basin — one of the world's largest LNG discoveries), titanium mineral sands (Kenmare Moma, largest ilmenite mine in the world), graphite, gemstones (rubies from Montepuez — one of the world's most significant ruby deposits), vanadium, and gold. CAMIM liaises with the Instituto Nacional de Minas (INAMI) and the Ministério dos Recursos Minerais e Energia (MIREME). Key member companies include Kenmare Resources (Moma mineral sands), Gemfields Group (Montepuez Ruby Mining), Syrah Resources (Balama graphite — world's largest graphite operation), TotalEnergies / Eni (Rovuma LNG), Vale (Moatize coal), and Vulcan Minerals. Mozambique adopted a revised Mining Law in 2014 and subsequent regulations governing community development, state participation (EMEM), and environmental compliance. Instability in Cabo Delgado Province (insurgency 2017-present) has affected northern resource development, particularly LNG.
