About
Barrick Mining Corporation operates the Lumwana copper mine in Zambia's North Western Province through its subsidiary Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC). Lumwana is a large open-pit copper mine located approximately 100 kilometres west of Solwezi, mining the Malundwe and Chimiwungo deposits within one of the world's largest undeveloped copper orebodies. Since Barrick acquired Lumwana through its 2011 takeover of Equinox Minerals, the mine has been transformed from a loss-making operation into one of Barrick's key strategic assets. Barrick is currently investing nearly $2 billion in a Lumwana Super Pit expansion designed to nearly double annual copper production to approximately 240,000 tonnes from a 50 million tonne per annum process plant — a project expected to deliver production from 2028 over a 36-year mine life. Lumwana contributes significantly to Zambia's economy through taxes, royalties, employment of Zambian nationals (99.3% of the workforce) and local procurement through Barrick's Business Accelerator Programme for Zambian contractors.
